Sie werden an Nervenendigungen synthetisiert, gespeichert und von dort aus auch freigesetzt.

Die Freisetzung erfolgt (in der Regel) aufgrund einer präsynaptischen Erregung.

Der Neurotransmitter wird von spezifischen Rezeptoren an der Postsynapse der benachbarten Zellen erkannt und raft in jener Zelle eine Reaktion hervor. Viele der Rezeptoren sind mittlerweile charakterisiert worden, und wie der Acetylcholinrezeptor können alle in mindestens zwei voneinander verschiedenen Funktionszuständen vorliegen.

d)
Der Einfluß des Neurotransmitters wird durch Antagonisten aufgehoben, wobei entweder die Komplexbildung Transmitter-Rezeptor oder die Freisetzung des Transmitters unterbunden wird.

e)
Neurotransmitter werden unmittelbar nach der Freisetzung zerstört. Andernfalls wäre mit einer Dauerreizung der Postsynapse zu rechnen.
