Zusammenfassung
DNS ist das genetische Material aller Organismen und vieler Viren, doch kennt man daneben auch eine Anzahl von Viren, deren Genom aus RNS besteht. Virale Genome sind in den letzten drei Jahrzehnten ausgiebig studiert worden, so daß wir über ihren Aufbau und ihren Informationsgehalt relativ gut Bescheid wissen. Viele der Aussagen lassen sich auf die DNS der Eukaryonten übertragen. Viren sind also geeignete Modelle zum Studium der allgemeinen Eigenschaften von DNS (und RNS). Dennoch ist Vorsicht geboten. Die Kenntnis des Genoms einfacher Viren ist nicht ausreichend, um alles über die Struktur und Organisation des Genoms eukaryotischer Zellen zu erfahren. Wie wir noch sehen werden (Kap. 45), unterscheidet man Viren aufgrund ihres Wirtsbereiches. Bakteriophagen z.B. vermehren sich nur in Bakterienzellen, und gerade die sind es, mit denen man sich in der Molekularbiologie ausgiebig auseinandergesetzt hat.
