Zusammenfassung
Der Anteil der mtDNS an der Gesamtzell-DNS kann bis zu 20% betragen, doch liegen die Werte meist darunter, in menschlichen Zellen z.B. bei nur 0,5%. Zellen enthalten größenordnungsmäßig zwischen 50 und 2000 mtDNS-Moleküle. Die Länge des Moleküls beträgt bei Säugetieren 4–5 μm, bei Saccharomyces etwa 25 μm und bei einigen Protisten 10–14 μm Bei den meisten Arten ist das Molekül zirkulär, aus einigen Protisten sind bisher nur lineare Moleküle isoliert worden. Ein 4 μm langes DNS-Molekül enthält etwa 15.000 Basenpaare (3000 Basenpaare ≙ 1 μm), was für die Codierung von 5000 Aminosäuren reicht. Geht man davon aus, daß ein Molekül im Schnitt ein Molekulargewicht von 20.000 hat (≙ 160–170 Aminosäuren), so hätten wir auf der mtDNS Platz für 30 Proteine. mtDNS codiert jedoch nicht nur für Proteine, sondern auch für rRNS und tRNS, wodurch sich die Zahl von 30 Proteinen auf weniger als 20 verringert.
