Zelloberflächen enthalten Moleküle öder Molekülkomplexe mit der Eigenschaft, spezifische Liganden oder andere Zellen zu erkennen, sie zu binden und nach der Bindung ein Signal ins Zellinnere zu leiten, das eine Reihe weiterer Ereignisse nach sich zieht. Die Signalübermittlung (der Informationstransfer) kann auf einem pulsartigen Ioneninflux beruhen, kann aber auch ohne Materialimport durch Konformationsänderungen von Membranproteinen erfolgen.
