Zusammenfassung
Alle Zellen sind von einer Membran umgeben. Viele von ihnen, vor allem die eukaryotischen, enthalten darüberhinaus ausgedehnte intrazelluläre Membransysteme. Membranen sind sehr komplexe Strukturen mit einer Vielzahl grundsätzlich voneinander verschiedener Funktionen. Sie grenzen das Zellinnere von der Umwelt ab, sie lassen Wasser, manche Ionen und essentielle Substrate in die Zelle hinein und sondern Exkretionsprodukte ab. Sie bieten der Zelle Schutz und dienen der Aufrechterhaltung des inneren Milieus. Ohne Membranen würden Zellinhalte zerfließen, informationstragende Moleküle würden durch Diffusion verlorengehen, Stoffwechselvorgänge würden einem thermischen Gleichgewicht zustreben, und das bedeutet bekanntlich den Tod eines lebenden Systems.
