Lipid Determination With the Hydroxylamine Method

  • Alois Nowotny

Different classes of lipids which contain ester groups react with alkaline hydroxylamine to form hydroxamic acid. The hydro-xamic acid reacts with acid ferric Perchlorate forming a purple-colored iron chelate complex. Free fatty acids do not react with alkaline hydroxylamine. This procedure was elaborated for quantitative determination of lipids by Snyder and Stephens (1959).
