Abstract
General concepts of disease epidemiology and the principles of control are discussed in this chapter. Specific diseases and nematode pests will be restricted to those attacking millet, sorghum, and the annual legumes (peanuts and cowpeas) grown in the Sudanian and Sahelian zones of West Africa under traditional crop production practices without the aid of irrigation. It must be emphasized that when irrigation programs are established and where continuous crop culture is practiced, a different set of disease and nematode disorders will evolve.
