Abstract
The purpose of this study is to compare survival in two closely •matched groups of patients, one treated surgically, and the other being the VA Cooperative medically treated group. Both groups represent patients treated in the period 1972-1974, the surgical group being personally operated for coronary artery disease and the VA Cooperative medical treatment cohort reported by Read et al. [1] in the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery in January of 1978. Utilizing the demographic and angiographic criteria published by the VA Cooperative study, we withdrew from the data bank computer of the Milwaukee Cardiovascular Data Registry a closely matched cohort of surgical patients and compared survival.
