Changing Medical and Surgical Therapy in Coronary Artery Disease — Need for Prospective Studies

  • Conference paper
Coronary Heart Surgery

Abstract

Following the pioneering efforts of Favalaro, reported in 19 68, it quickly became apparent that the aortocoronary bypass graft was the first surgical procedure to reliably and reproducibly increase coronary blood flow in patients with coronary artery disease. Coronary artery disease is generally a mechanical problem. In most patients the large external arteries proximal to the intramyocardial branches are blocked. Hence the success of bypass.
