  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Ecological Studies ((ECOLSTUD,volume 33))

Abstract

Systematic studies on root systems were started in the eighteenth century. With a simple excavation technique Hales (1727) dug out root systems of cultivated crops and determined their morphology, as well as their weight and length. Du Hamel Du Monceau (1764/65) excavated tree root systems. Then for over one hundred years no important root research was documented.
