Abstract

Numerous techniques of mechanical cardiac assistance have been studied during the past quarter of a century, but only two have as yet become recognized as standard clinical procedures. Artificial oxygenation and circulation of the blood by means of a pump-oxygenator, for which an operating room is required, have made possible the gamut of open-heart surgical procedures we know today. Intra-aortic balloon pumping (IABP), which can be performed in the intensive care environment and requires only minor surgery, has demonstrated the potential in such clinically important applications as cardiogenic shock and support in association with diagnostic and surgical procedures. In addition, a number of promising applications of the technique are undergoing investigation.

The work described in this report was supported in part by Grants HE-11173 and HE-13737 from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, Department of Health, Education, and Welfare; the David and Minnie Berk Foundation; and the John A. Hartford Foundation, Inc.
