Abstract

Chemical engineering provides several examples of thermokinetic oscillations which are accounted for by the thermal properties of both the reaction steps and the vessel [1]. On the other hand, non-equilibrium thermodynamics predicts unusual patterns in isothermal chemical systems far from equilibrium [2], and kinetic analysis of reaction schemes shows that periodicity may appear, provided some kind of feedback is involved [3]. Two questions then arise: (i) are such chemical oscillations truly encountered, and (ii) how do these oscillations differ from thermokinetic ones.
