Funktionell läßt sich der Stoffwechsel jeder Zelle in den Energie- und den Leistungsstoffwechsel aufgliedern (Kap. 1). Der exergone Energiestoffwechsel treibt den formal endergonen Leistungsstoffwechsel; Kopplungsglied ist die „biologische Energie“.

Das ATP-System ist der molekulare Träger der „biologischen“Energie. Das System besteht aus nur 5 A TP-liefernden, vielen ATP-verbrauchenden und 2 das System erhaltenden Reaktionen. Im Energiestoffwechsel wird das „energiereiche“ATP aus ADP und anorganischem Phosphat unter Energieaufnahme gebildet und im Leistungsstoffwechsel unter Energieabgabe entweder zu ADP und Phosphat oder zu AMP und Pyrophosphat gespalten. AMP findet durch Umsetzung mit ATP zu 2 ADP, Pyrophosphat durch Hydrolyse zu 2 Phosphat wieder An-schluß an den Energiestoffwechsel.
