Zellen als Energietransformatoren

Unter funktionell-biochemischen Aspekten können Zellen als Energietransformatoren bezeichnet werden. Sie besitzen ein System, das von außen zugeführte chemische oder physikalische Energie in „biologische“Energie transformiert und das diese dann weiter in chemische, osmotische oder mechanische Arbeit umsetzt. Die Prozesse, die „biologische“Energie liefern, werden funktionell in den Energiestoffwechsel, und die, die sie wieder verbrauchen, in den Leistungsstoffwechsel eingeordnet. Da weder der Energiestoffwechsel noch der Leistungsstoffwechsel mit 100% Energieausbeute ablaufen, wird ein Teil der umgesetzten Energie immer als Wärme frei.
