Abstract
Excitation of an excited state rotational level of a diatomic molecule by circularly polarised light prepares that J′ level with a well defined Mj′ distribution. The excited state ensemble is formed with precisely determined values of the state multipoles k = 0,1,2 these are known as the population, orientation and alignment of the excited state.
