Comparative Aspects: Oncogenic Animal Herpesviruses

  • Chapter
The Epstein-Barr Virus

Abstract

A strong case can be made for including the oncogenic animal herpesviruses in a book on Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). Various proliferative diseases of animals are associated with RNA and DNA viruses and animal herpesviruses have been identified either as causative agents or as consistent associates of several, naturally occurring tumors. Close parallels can be drawn between some characteristics of these tumors and the expression of EBV infections in man. Exploration of the similarities (and disparities, too) of the malignancies seen in animals other than man, whether these diseases are induced experimentally or occur naturally, can cast light upon the human disease(s) caused by EBV. This chapter will review the animal oncogenic herpesviruses and the pathogenesis of the proliferative diseases they cause, in the hope that this somewhat different perspective will illuminate the role EBV plays in human disease.
