Zusammenfassung

Die Bezeichnung »Bindegewebe« entstammt der Auffassung, die Hauptaufgabe dieses faserigen Gewebes bestünde im Zusammenhalten (»Binden«) der Zellen, Gewebeteile, Organe und Körperteile. Diese mechanische Teilfunktion ist unbestritten; insbesondere gilt sie für die sehr reißfesten Sehnen und Faszien, die man als straffes Bindegewebe bezeichnet. Stützaufgaben erfüllen das für Gelenke und andere Knochenverbindungen geeignete, druck-, biegungs- und torsionselastische Knorpelgewebe sowie das einem Verbundbau aus kol-lagenen Fasern und Apatitkristallen vergleichbare Knochengewebe. Man erkannte immer mehr, daß insbesondere das an sauren Mukopolysacchariden (Glykosaminoglykanen) reichere lockere Bindegewebe im Innern der Organe im Dienst der Homöostase, der Speicherung und des Austausches von Proteinbestandteilen, Kohlenhydraten, Lipiden und vor allem Elektrolyten sowie des Stofftransports zwischen Gefäßen und Parenchymzellen steht. Überdies bietet das Bindegewebe den Boden für entzündliche Vorgänge (S. 1243) und besorgt Reparaturleistungen verschiedener Art. Wahrscheinlich geht die Bedeutung des Bindegewebes noch erheblich über das bisher Gesagte hinaus.
