Summary
The form of the deformation map, as introduced by Ashby, is considered with emphasis on the region of high dislocation velocity (high stress). Of particular concern is the transition at high strain rates from a thermally activated to a linear viscous mode of deformation. New experimental data on aluminum and copper over a wide range in temperature and strain rates to 105 s-1 are presented. No evidence of the linear viscous mode was observed in these tests. Other data in the literature show a transition at strain rates on the order of 103 s-1.
