Abstract

In order to study the history of ancient oscillatory movements we use their various forms of influencing the distribution of the thicknesses and facies of sediments. In the language of physics an inverse problem is posed, viz., to infer the history of the development of oscillatory movements in ancient geological periods from the change in thicknesses and facies of sediments both areally and in section. Two main methods are at our disposal for tackling this problem: (a) the method of thicknesses, and (b) the method of facies.
