There are two topics to discuss relative to the issue of heart failure which most concern physicians involved in the care of patients with coronary artery disease. The first occurs in the setting of acute myocardial infarction with its attendant high mortality, and secondly, the problem of pump failure during the immediate post-operative period following coronary artery bypass surgery.
