Abstract

Higher plants have attained the capacity to synthesize a large spectrum of phenylpropanoid and phenylpropanoid-derived phenolic compounds. In addition to the investigation of the principal pathways involved in phenylpropanoid synthesis and further metabolism by extensive tracer studies in this field of secondary plant substances much work on the enzymatic level has been done (AMRHEIN and ZENK, 2; ALIBERT et al., 3; GRISEBACH, 2; GRISEBACH and HAHLBROCK; HALBROCK, 1, 3; RANJEVA et al., 3; STAFFORD, 2; ZAPROMETOV). The following is a review of some topics concerning the metabolism of phenylpropanoid compounds. Only selective references are cited.
