Zusammenfassung
Als Descartes im 17. Jahrhundert behauptete, ein Tier sei nichts anderes als eine Maschine, gab er den Anstoß zu einem Meinungsstreit, der — in stets wechselnder Form — bis zum heutigen Tage fortdauert. Descartes erkannte lediglich Reiz und Reaktion an, als ob die Reaktion eine notwendige und automatische Folge des Reizes sei. Den Beitrag, den das Tier selbst, insbesondere sein Zentralnervensystem, zu der Reaktion leistet, übersah er völlig. Dieses Versäumnis wurde im 18. Jahrhundert zum Gegenstand eines großen Meinungsstreits. Condillac (1755) attackierte Buffons karte-sianische Auslegung und betonte die Fähigkeit des Tieres, aus Erfahrung zu lernen und einsichtig zu handeln. Dem widersprach wiederum Reimarus (1760), der mit wohlgewählten Beispielen darlegte, ein welch großer Teil des adaptiven Verhaltens bei Tieren bereits von Geburt an vorhanden ist, also zum Erbgut der Art gehört. Er veröffentlichte die erste umfassende Abhandlung über das Instinktverhalten.
