Natural Regeneration of Tree Stands at Timberline

Part of the Ecological Studies book series (ECOLSTUD, volume 31)

At natural timberline there exists a dynamic equilibrium between advance of regeneration upwards in the timberline ecotone (kampfzone) and retreat of this regeneration due to existence of external conditions no longer conducive to survival. Natural regeneration thus plays an important role in maintaining the upper forest limit. Prerequisites to this end are the presence of seed-bearing trees, together with the occurrence of seed years resulting in adequate production and distribution of viable seed.
