Abstract

For the investigation of ultrafast processes, spectroscopists desire light pulses with picosecond pulse duration, wide tuning range and large peak power. Existing laser devices fulfill these requirements only in part. As an example, we point to studies of the vibrational dynamics of polyatomic molecules in condensed phases where ultrashort pulses in the infrared are required. Liquid dye lasers are not applicable in this region; mode-locked solid-state lasers, on the other hand, do not possess tunability.
