Abstract
NATO’s Committee on the Challenges of Modern Society (CCMS) was established in November 1969 as a mechanism for international action in dealing with common problems of a nonstrategic, nonmilitary nature. The focus of the Committee’s attention has been on specific areas of social, economic, and technological concerns, which are of interest to all member and participating nations. The Committee began when the President of the United States called for action in areas of environmental concern. This was the first time a social dimension was added to the Atlantic Alliance.
