Abstract

The optical properties of the double molecule 9,9′-bianthryl (Fig. 1) are of special interest since the two chromophores are virtually non-interacting in the ground state and excited Franck-Condon states while the lowest excited state, under the influence of solvent perturbations, exhibits characteristics of strong charge transfer interactions. This behavior is particularly interesting in the context of the intra- and intermolecular dynamical processes connecting the initial excited state with the final, emitting excited state. The fact that the energy and composition of the emitting state is dependent on the nature of the solvent suggests that in this system a range of relaxation phenomena may be examined.
