Abstract
The purpose of this brief communication is not to present a profound analysis of the problems of the head-injured patient nor to offer a nationalistic survey of North American accomplishments in the field. Rather, I propose to review, in summary fashion, steps taken in the past and being made at present, in the belief that a backward look may throw some light on the future. I trust that the selected bibliography may prove useful for European colleagues. My comments will be limited to the North American experience. Canadian and United States neurologic surgeons share a great deal, and for our present purposes may be looked on as a common group.
