Abstract

In the first International Colloquium on Carbohydrate Metabolism in Pregnancy and the Newborn the topic “the fetal endocrine pancreas” was covered by a review of the functional development of the fetal islet focussing on man and the most commonly studied animal species (Milner et al. , 1975). Since that time there has been a steady accretion of new facts but little has been dicovered which might serve as a stimulus for radical rethinking in this subject. Therefore, in accepting the remit “the fetal endocrine pancreas” for a second time, a specific theme has been chosen which is developed in an essay that is partly a review of recent work and partly unashamedly speculative.
