Abstract

Islet hypertrophy, B–cell hyperplasia and increased B–cell granulation have been demonstrated in normal pregnancy in the rat (van Assche, 1974; Aerts and van Assche, 1975). These morphological findings correlate with the biological feature of hyperinsulinism in animal and human pregnancy (Hellman, 1960; Spellacy and Goetz, 1963; Rishi et al, 1969; Malaisse et al. , 1969; Spellacy, 1971; Green and Taylor, 1972; van Assche, 1974; Aerts and van Assche, 1975). This hyperinsulinism during pregnancy corresponds with an increased sensitivity (insulin synthesis and secretion), to glucose and other secretogogues (Green and Taylor, 1972; Fisher and Sutherland, 1975; Bone and Taylor, 1976).
