Abstract

Since the discovery of insulin, pregnancy in the diabetic no longer constitutes a threat to the life of the mother. Perinatal mortality however has always been higher than in the non-diabetic and despite the considerable fall during the last three decades it is still twice as high in diabetics. Table 1 shows perinatal mortality at King’s College Hospital during the last 27 years. During the years 1971–1977 perinatal mortality was 9 of 201 (4.5%). This compares with the national perinatal mortality of just below 2%.
