Abstract
Kenya is a country of such great diversity in the regional sense, that the natural conditions of life of its population are extraordinarily varied. Kenya’s palm-fringed coast along the Indian Ocean, with its fine-grained sand beaches and rich marine life, belongs to the earth’s most renowned holiday areas. In the great national parks of the country the recollection of a pristine Africa, of the abundance of game in magically beautiful scenery, remains alive. The vast and gently undulating plains with their eye-catching inselbergen, and the varied forms of the dry savanna comprise the realm of pastoral nomads. Persevering and undemanding, they remain to roam the areas of scant precipitation, always on the move to new pastures and water holes, their existence constantly threatened by the loss of their herds when the rains fail for years on end, when grass and water-holes dry up. What a contrast this presents to the fertile, well-watered and densely settled Kenya Highlands inhabited by the small farmers. Numerous cultivated plants from Africa, Asia, America, and Europe flourish here: cereals and tubers, vegetables and fruit, coffee and tea. Healthy cattle thrive on the lush meadows.
