The Evolution of Toxins Found in Snake Venoms

  • Chapter
Snake Venoms

Part of the book series: Handbook of Experimental Pharmacology ((HEP,volume 52))

Abstract

The past decade has seen both the beginnings of knowledge on the chemical structure of snake venom toxins and the subsequent explosion in the amount of available data on this subject. The chemistry of these proteins has been dealt with by Karlsson in Chapter 5. One of the possible types of information that can be gleaned from such a mass of data on protein structures is the evolutionary history of the genes coding for those proteins, as well as information on the biologic classification of the organisms possessing these genes.
