Snake Venoms

Part of the book series: Handbook of Experimental Pharmacology ((HEP,volume 52))

Abstract

Since prehistoric times, man has suffered from envenomation from snakebite. Today, snakebite is still a medical problem of considerable magnitude. According to Swaroop and Grab (1954, 1956), about 30000–40000 deaths occur annually from bites of venomous snakes in those areas of the world that have national registration, covering a total population of 1122 millions.
