Abstract

The tissues which comprise the abdominal wall - the skin, subcutaneous fat, fascia and muscles - may each be affected by a variety of conditions which cause disability or disfigurement. In many cases alterations occur in several of the tissues. Obesity, for example, is not confined to subcutaneous adipose accumulation. It is frequently combined with flaccidity or diastasis of the abdominal muscles. Obese patients who have undergone abdominal surgery tend to produce weak and unaesthetic scars with a high incidence of incisional herniae. Multiple pregnancies also weaken all abdominal wall structures and hormonal changes have detrimental effects on the dermis, collagenous framework, elastic fibres and adipose tissue.
