Anti-Inflammatory Drugs

Part of the book series: Handbook of Experimental Pharmacology ((HEP,volume 50 / 2))

Abstract

A number of toxic agents happen to exhibit therapeutic side-effects including the suppression of inflammatory disease. Obviously, those used in the clinic have a tolerable therapeutic index. The acceptability of some of these toxic drugs may be due to any one or more of the following reasons: (1) they have a reversible effect on cell populations that turn over slowly; (2) they mainly delete cells from populations with a high rate of generation; (3) their toxicity is not incompatible with maintenance of cell vitality.
