Abstract
The prostaglandins were introduced into the field of thermoregulation in 1970 by Milton and Wendlandt when they found that prostaglandin E1 (PGE1 injected into the third ventricle of unanaesthetized cats produced fever. The effect has been confirmed and extended to other species. It was found to be due to an action on the pre-optic anterior hypothalamic area and to be resistant to the action of those antipyretics which were shown to inhibit prostaglandin synthesis (Vane, 1971) and to bring down fever produced by endotoxins and endogenous pyrogens. These findings provided the first evidence for the theory that prostaglandins of the E series are the mediators of the fever produced by endotoxins, endogenous pyrogens, and perhaps of the fever of all infectious diseases (Feldberg and Saxena, 1971a; Milton and Wendlandt, 1971 b; Vane, 1971).
