Inflammation

Part of the book series: Handbook of Experimental Pharmacology ((HEP,volume 50 / 1))

Abstract

During the inflammatory response, cells elaborate many biologically active chemicals and the tenor of pharmacological research at any time is, not unnaturally, set by the current state of knowledge concerning these inflammatory mediators; thus, in the past, this field has been dominated by the discovery of histamine, bradykinin and 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT), with the subsequent invention of antihistamine and anti-5-HT drugs.
