Abstract

The Egyptian medical texts had a number of terms, apparently referring to inflammatory conditions, which were all derived from the hieroglyphic for “fire”. According to Blersch (1973) they had terms which distinguished local from generalised inflammation, and regarded the condition as a superficial heating arising from outside the body, and not internally generated.
