Zusammenfassung
Die Stoffwechselbesonderheiten des Wachstumsalters lassen sich am besten herausstellen durch den Vergleich mit dem Stoffwechsel im ausgewachsenen Zustand. Deshalb muß ich einleitend auf ein paar Grundtatsachen des Stoffwechsels hinweisen. Der Stoffwechsel dient der Energieproduktion für die verschiedenen energieabhängigen Leistungen und der Erneuerung von abgebauter Körpersubstanz. Dieser ständige Abbau ist die Folge der Allgegenwart von Enzymen, und er muß durch eine Neusynthese im gleichen Ausmaß kompensiert werden. Man bezeichnet das als „dynamisches Gleichgewicht“ der Körperbestandteile. Das Material für den Baustoffwechsel und für die Energiegewinnung muß mit der Nahrung zugeführt werden. Da wir im ausgewachsenen Zustand steady state-Verhältnisse haben, sich also Synthese und Abbau die Waage halten, ergibt sich die erforderliche exogene Zufuhr an Baumaterial und Energielieferanten als die Summe aus den unvermeidlichen Verlusten und dem, was für Arbeit benötigt wird. Wir sehen das im ersten Schema auf der linken Seite (Abb. 1) Im Wachstumsalter überwiegt die Synthese über den Abbau. Es besteht also ein zusätzlicher Bedarf an Material und Energie für Wachstum und so setzt sich die erforderliche Zufuhr zusammen aus Material zur Kompensation der Verluste, zur Ermöglichung von Arbeitsleistung und zur Bestreitung des Wachstums (Abb. 1, rechter Teil).
