Abstract

The wide distribution in human body fluids and tissues of fibrinolysis activators most probably reflects their outstanding physiologic importance. The proteolytic activity of urine was discovered in 1861 by von Brücke, its ability to dissolve fibrin clots by Sahli in 1885. The existence of several proteolytic enzymes, some with pH optimum in the weak alkaline range, was soon recognized (Gehrig, 1886; Grützner, 1891).
