Abstract

Examinations of lesions in or near the skull base by CT are somewhat difficult both to perform and to interpret. The first types of CT machine surrounded the head with a water-containing bag, which limited the size of head which could be examined. If the skull was large, it was difficult to obtain satisfactory pictures of even the middle cranial fossa; examination of the posterior fossa was even less satisfactory. Moreover, impurities in the water were the cause of certain artefacts.
