Animal conservation in wetlands, and particularly that of wildfowl, depends entirely on the conservation of the whole wetland ecosystems with the surrounding waterlogged grasslands and woodlands. Both the South Bohemian and South Moravian fishpond regions include several nature reserves that are of international importance for wildfowl conservation, being included in the lists of Projects Aqua (Luther and Rzóska, 1971) and Mar (Hudec et al., 1967; Hudec and Randík, 1972) and in IUCN’s Check List of Wetlands of International Importance.
