Abstract
Among the helophytes colonizing fishpond shores, there is only one species that is exploited and/or cultivated on a large scale: the common reed, Phragmites communis Trin. In the Czechoslovak IBP Wetlands project, attention was paid to applied aspects of the ecology of this species, which may also be looked upon as a technical crop with a long tradition as well as promising prospects.
