The skin on and around the site of entry must be carefully disinfected with iodine or iodine substitute. Some authors recommend previous degreasing. In Horisberger’s (242, 243) experience the rate of infection can be significantly lowered, even with the use of ready-for-use, sterile- packed catheter material, by using sterile gloves and mask as well as sterile coverage of the puncture site. If the puncture area is hairy, shaving is of course necessary before degreasing and disinfection.
