Abstract
There is increasing evidence that the variation in nuclear DNA content between species is caused predominantly by the variation of the amount of repetitive DNA (FLAVELL et al.; NAGL, 4, 6). NARAYAN and REES studied nine species of Lathyrus, where the 2C DNA content ranges from 12.45 pg to 20.27 pg. While the single-copy DNA is quite stable (5.48 pg to 6.17 pg), the repetitive DNA amount closely parallels the variation in total DNA in ranging from 6.98 pg to 14.10 pg. Similar findings were obtained in the grasshopper genus Atraotomorpha (MIKLOS and NANKIVELL) and in other animals (BALDARI and AMALDI; COLBERT et al.).
