Abstract

A new classification of the terrestrial ecosystems of the earth is proposed by WALTER. ETHERINGTON presented in a factor-by-factor approach a new textbook on physiologic plant ecology, while Chapman edited an introduction on common methods in ecologic research including data collection systems. Philosophy and progress within the five Biome programs that make up the analysis of the ecosystems portion of the United States’ contribution to the International Biological Program were described in one part of the third volume of System Analysis and Simulation in Ecology (PATTEN). The other part deals in considerable detail with modeling of selected fresh-water ecosystems and one estuarine system. Concepts and techniques of modeling marine systems were also presented by NIHOUL. Interactions between land and water environments were the topics of the 18th International Congress of Limnology (HASLER); many of these subjects were also discussed at a symposium on the limnology of shallow water (SALANKI and PONYI). Not only water ecologists will be interested in the limnologic books of COLE and of WETZEL and WHITTON.
