Abstract

Since the last review on morphogenesis and structure of plastids in higher plants (P. SITTE, Fortschr. Botan. 34, 1972), the main progress has shifted further from the pure ultrastructural level to the study of structural, biogenetic, and physilogic aspects of plastid subfragments. It has become evident that the biogenesis and function of plastid constituents require the cooperative expression of both plastome and genome. In the past few years, research in this field has increased exponentially and matches in magnitude that on photosynthesis. Two recent interdisciplinary symposia on organelle biogenesis demonstrate the considerable interest devoted to this field: BOGORAD and WEIL (1, 2) and BÜCHER et al.
