Estimation of Bacterial Number and Biomass by Epifluorescence Microscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy

  • Chapter
Microbial Ecology of a Brackish Water Environment

Part of the book series: Ecological Studies ((ECOLSTUD,volume 25))

Abstract

In order to help understand the microbial ecology of an aquatic biotope, it is necessary to know the total bacterial numbers and the bacterial biomass. However, only a few methods are available today which reflect the quantity and form-diversity of the bacterial flora. The small size of the bacterial cell as well as the heterogeneity of the habitat restrict the choice of methods.
