Abstract
Provided that vagal stimulation, antifibrillatory pharmacotherapy, and ß-receptor blockade fail, electrical cardioversion is the treatment of choice in cardiac arrhythmias. Therapeutic reliability has grown substantially since the introduction of DC-defibrillation controlled by the cardiac action cycle (Kouwenhoven et al., 1954; Lown et al., 1962, 1964; McDonald et al., 1964), as opposed to AC-defibrillation (Alexander et al., 1961; Zoll et al., 1956).
