Abstract
JANSSEN et al., (1971) first described the new intravenous hypnotic agent etomidate, belonging to the hypnotics with imidazole-carboxylate structure. Investigations in animals and humans (BRÜCKNER et al., 1974; DOENICKE et al., 1973) followed. In comparison with Althesin, ketamine, methohexitone and propanidid, etomidate caused only minimal side effects on cardiovascular system (BRÜCKNER et al., 1974). The present study was undertaken in order to determine the influence of etomidate on ventilation and gas exchange in geriatric patients.
